State Guide

Arizona Business License

This guide covers Arizona's general business license requirements — state-level registration, local city and county licenses, fees, and renewal timelines.

Overview

Arizona does not have a general state-level business license. Instead, the state collects a Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT), and businesses must obtain a TPT license from the Arizona Department of Revenue — which functions similarly to a business license for tax purposes.

Beyond the TPT license, nearly every Arizona city and town requires a separate local privilege tax license. Requirements and fees vary by municipality. Phoenix, Tucson, Scottsdale, Mesa, and Tempe all maintain their own local business license programs.
