State Guide

Florida Business License

This guide covers Florida's general business license requirements — state-level registration, local city and county licenses, fees, and renewal timelines.

Overview

Florida does not issue a general state business license. Instead, businesses must obtain a Local Business Tax Receipt (formerly called an Occupational License) from the county in which they operate — and in some cases from the city as well.

The county Business Tax Receipt (BTR) is the primary general business license in Florida. Miami-Dade, Broward, Orange, Hillsborough, and all other Florida counties each administer their own BTR programs with separate fees and renewal timelines.
